La Galgada

Important Features of La Galgada Architecture

Fire Pit Chambers: Ceremonial chambers at the site of La Galgada were centered around a fire pit.  These fire pits contain remains of burned stone, shell, and food.  To learn more about the fire pits click here.

Rebuilding Phases: Several times throughout the life of La Galgada the major mounds were rebuilt, where a new floor was constructed directly on top of the previous summit.  This would add to the already prevalent stepped sidewalls of the mound.  The largest North Mound was believed to have been rebuilt at least four times with three major phases occurring.  To learn more about the mound levels click here.

Burial Tombs
: When a chamber was no longer in use they would be created into burial tombs.  These tombs would often times remain accessible for a number of generations, and would occasionally have more bodies added at a later date.  To learn more about the burial tombs click here.
