What is Aspero?

Aspero is a site on the Peru coast that was occupied between the dates 2800 BC to 2000 BC, but it has been argued for occupation as early as 3050 BC.  Aspero was part of the larger Supe Coastal Religious Tradition and was at its peak during the Late Archaic, or Cotton Preceramic Period in history that dates 3000 BC to 1800 BC.  Aspero was on the mid-north desert coast of Peru and was approximately 250 kilometers south of the site of La Galgada.  It is best known for its major mounds Huaca de los Idolos and Huaca de los Idolos.  At its peak Aspero covered around 12 hectares of land.  Aspero was initially discovered by Max Uhle in 1905, and was first excavated in 1941.
